Venn Diagram Maker

2 to 5 sets. Type the members and they land in the right region, or shade any set expression.

Sets

Each item is drawn in the region of the sets that list it.

Nothing saved yet. Your diagram is kept on this device once you edit it.

An item typed in two lists goes in their overlap. Spaces at the ends are ignored; capitals count, so Cat and cat are two items.

Options

Sizes are totals: |A ∩ B| counts everything in both, the middle included. Leave a box empty to use your item counts (shown faint).

How to make a Venn diagram

  1. Tap 2, 3, 4 or 5 for the number of sets, then name each set and pick its colour.
  2. Under Items, type each set's members, one per line. An item you type in two or more lists is drawn in their overlap, and the table under the diagram counts every region.
  3. For homework, tap Shade and type an expression such as A ∩ B′ or (A u B) n C, or tap regions on the diagram. The page shades them and names them in words.
  4. For a meme or a slide, tap Labels, tap a region and type your own text.
  5. Download a PNG (1x to 4x) or an SVG, copy the image into a document, or make a share link.

Why 4 and 5 sets use ellipses

A Venn diagram shows every combination of in and out: 2 sets have 4 regions, 3 have 8, 4 have 16 and 5 have 32 (outside all of them included). Circles stop working after three. Two circles cross in at most two points, so n circles can make at most n² − n + 2 regions: 14 for four circles, two short of 16. Drawings that put four equal circles in a square leave out the A-and-C-only and B-and-D-only regions. This page draws four sets with the four congruent ellipses John Venn published in 1880, and five sets with Branko Grünbaum's five congruent ellipses from 1975, each turned 72° from the next. The shape numbers come from the open-source pyvenn drawing code (venn.py, fetched 2026-10-19), and a test samples a fine grid over the drawing and finds all 16 and all 32 regions.

A worked example

Type A = 1, 2, 3; B = 2, 3, 4; C = 3, 5. The page puts 3 in the middle (A, B and C), 2 in A and B but not C, 1 in A only, 4 in B only and 5 in C only; the A-and-C-only and B-and-C-only regions stay empty, and the table shows 0 for them. Now shade A ∩ B′: in A and not in B. That is two regions, A only and A and C, not B, which here hold just the 1. (A ∪ B) ∩ C shades the three regions of C that touch A or B; typed as (A u B) n C it gives the same three.

Area-proportional circles

Tick the box and give the set sizes (or let your item counts size them). With 2 sets the drawing is exact: each circle's area matches its set and the overlap's area matches |A ∩ B|, found by solving the lens-area formula for the distance between the centres. With 3 sets each circle and each pairwise overlap is exact, but three circles cannot also be forced to give the right middle region, so the page says how far off the largest region is, as a share of the whole drawing.

What it cannot do

  • Proportional areas are exact for 2 sets only. For 3 sets they are approximate, and for 4 or 5 sets there is no proportional option.
  • 6 or more sets are not drawn: 64 regions are too small to read or label.
  • It shades an expression, it does not prove identities: to check that two expressions are equal, shade each and compare the region lists.
  • Expressions use the letters A to E for the sets, not the names you give them.
  • Some regions of the 5-set diagram are thin, so long items are shortened in the drawing with a “+N more”; the table under the diagram always lists them all.
  • Up to 300 items per set and 80 characters per item. Share links longer than 2,000 characters may be cut short by some chat apps; send the PNG or SVG instead.
  • The PNG and SVG use the fonts on the device that opens them (Geist where it is installed, otherwise Helvetica or Arial).

Privacy and what is stored

Your sets, items and labels never leave your device: the diagram is drawn by code in this page and exports are made in the browser. The latest diagram is saved in this browser's local storage once you edit it, so a reload keeps it; Clear saved diagram deletes it in one tap. The page sends an anonymous page-view count and, at most, two fixed words (venn-make, venn-export), never a name or an item. A share link carries the diagram after the #, which browsers do not send to any server, and opening one saves nothing unless you tap Keep this copy.

Questions

How do I make a Venn diagram with 4 circles?

Tap 4. Four sets need 16 regions (every in/out combination, including outside all of them), and four circles cannot make that: two circles cross in at most 2 points, so n circles make at most n² − n + 2 regions, which is 14 for four. So this page draws four congruent ellipses, the arrangement John Venn himself published, and every one of the 16 regions is there.

Can I make a Venn diagram with 5 circles?

Yes, tap 5. Five sets need 32 regions; this page uses Branko Grünbaum's five congruent ellipses, turned 72° from each other, which give all 32. Some regions are small, so with long item lists switch Show to Counts and read the items from the region table under the diagram.

How do I shade A ∩ B′ or (A ∪ B) ∩ C?

Tap Shade and type the expression with the keypad or your keyboard: ∪ or u for union, ∩ or n for intersection, ′ or ' for complement, − or - for difference, Δ or ^ for symmetric difference, U for the universal set. The matching regions are shaded, the expression is written back in standard notation, and the shaded regions are listed in words, for example A ∩ B′ on three sets: A only; A and C, not B.

Can I put my own text in the regions, for a meme or a slide?

Yes. Tap Labels, tap a region on the diagram (or pick it from the list) and type. Name the circles in the Sets box, pick their colours, add a title, then download a PNG or copy the image straight into a slide or a chat.

How do I get the diagram into PowerPoint or Google Slides?

Tap Copy image and paste it into the slide, or download a PNG at 2x to 4x for a sharp picture. Download SVG for a vector file that stays crisp at any size, in any app that can insert SVG pictures; its names and items are real text, not pixels.

Is this Venn diagram maker free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free, with no account, no watermark and no ads. The diagram is drawn by code in this page on your own device and nothing you type is uploaded. The last diagram is kept in this browser so a reload does not lose it, and one tap clears it.
